To set up a virtual operating system under Windows 7 you need to download only VMware and the Ubuntu iso image and install. A very good guide can be found here. Both are available for free.
The Thinkpad from Lenovo (I use the X220) you need to set in the BIOS virtualization only for safety.
In addition one must shutdown the laptop and only cold restart. When starting in F1 must be pressed and in the Bios Security-> Enable Virtualization Both entries are enabled otherwise when you install Ubuntu with VMware is the following error message:
“You have configured this virtual machine to use a 64-bit guest operating system. However, 64-bit operation is not possible. This host does not support VT.
